Muscat, Feb 11: The Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP) under the canopy of ISC-MKW and in association with Renna Mobile conducted a family Fun Sports Day ‘Fun in the Sun’ on January 26, which was complete with excitement, entertainment, and enjoyment at Sidab Grounds, Muscat.
The event drew a large number of participants and their families who were eager to be a part of the various fun-filled activities that were lined up for the day. Participants from the community spanning various age groups engaged in spirited competition, exhibiting remarkable zeal and enthusiasm.
The venue buzzed with activity as participants gathered for registration while simultaneously enjoying a delectable breakfast. The inauguration ceremony commenced as Fr Stephen Lewis, accompanied by Fr Marian Miranda, led the gathering in prayer.Emcee Sherwin D’Silva invited president Nirmala Goveas and the executive committee members to the dais, alongside chief guests Francis and Cynthia D’Souza, and guests of honor, Hansel Barboza, and Ajith Walder. Following his inaugural speech, Francis D’Souza, along with Fr Stephen Lewis and Fr Marian Miranda, unveiled the event banner, thus officially inaugurating the event. The guest of honour, Jessie Vivian Pereira, also graced the event with her presence.
A spirited march-past by the four competing groups set the tone for an exciting day. Subsequently, six men’s teams were formed for box cricket, adding a competitive element to the start of the games. As the box cricket league matches were underway, various categories of athletic games for children and adults were held simultaneously. Exciting sporting events that included frog races, rabbit races, sack races, as well as 50-, 100, and 200-meters sprints for children, along with 100 meters walking and running races for adults, drew a large number of participants. The competitions not only showcased thrilling finishes but also nurtured a strong sense of competitiveness among all who participated.
After a sumptuous lunch was served by RaRa Kitchen, it was time for the women’s box cricket as well as men’s semi-final games to commence. While the teams were vying with each other for the top spot, Nirmala Goveas inaugurated the traditional ‘Gudaangadi’ that had an impressive display of items and also served delicious snacks. The eagerly awaited fun games then began to everyone’s delight. Four teams competed tooth and nail with each other for games like coconut breaking competition, lagori, tug of war and longest human chain that made all present nostalgic and reminisce about their childhood days. The quotient of excitement was raised as a traditional cock fight was organized followed by an auction of the cocks as well as the gudaangadi items. A game of housie was then played by all present, thus adding a perfect finale to an enthralling day.
The day concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by community services secretary, Sunita Furtado. This was followed by honoring the referees and supporters of the event, as well as the prize distribution ceremony. Thus, the joy of a fun-filled day came to a close and proved to be a cherished one for all who participated and attended the event.
